Hit the Road Healthy

It’s hard to do business if you’re stuck in bed with the flu or a nasty respiratory infection. If you travel a lot for business, you are exposed to more germs and are generally more susceptible to viruses and infections because your travel schedule often gives your immune system a beating.

If your business depends on you being on the road, you can’t afford to neglect your health. There are many easy ways to help boost your health and therefore your profits by creating good travel habits. WEALTH magazine asked some road warriors who travel at least once a week what their top piece of advice is for staying healthy on the road. We offer them to you. Happy travels!

Drink lots of water. Nothing is better than water for flushing out toxins, keeping skin hydrated, helping mental acuity, and kick-starting your immune system. Drink an extra bottle before you get on any plane, and take sips frequently during flights. We know airplane restrooms are a pain, but if getting sick is the alternative, it’s worth the hassle. Make it your goal to drink between a half-gallon and a gallon of water each day. That’s eight to 16, eight-ounce glasses or approximately four to eight half-liter bottles of water.

Stick to a diet of whole grains and lean meats, and pack in as many fruits and veggies as you can. Processed sugar and white flour are bad for your body anytime, but especially when you’re traveling. Even when you’re eating three meals a day in restaurants, you can find healthy choices on nearly every menu now.

Create an environment with a taste of home. If you have to live out of a suitcase, make it your practice to bring a few favorite items to make it feel like home. Whether it’s your own pillow, a family photo, a scented candle, or comfy throw blanket, familiar favorites can bring down your stress level and help you relax.

Exercise your body. Use the hotel gyms, or pop in an exercise DVD. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Make sure you get in a workout in at least three times a week, especially when you’re on the road.

If you fly frequently, get to know airlines’ loyalty and affinity programs. See which give you the most perks, upgrades, and access to the best airport lounges. Ask other travelers which airlines are the most flexible. When you can get last-minute flights you need or upgrades that make you more comfortable with little time and effort, the stress of traveling eases.

Learn to pack lightly, so that you never have to check a suitcase. You save money, time and the stress of lost bags if you never check an item.

Invest in good luggage. Suitcases that roll easily and hold up well save you money in the long run, but they can also keep you healthy. Less back pain and muscle strain equals a healthier you!
